Radio and Youth Audience Powerpoint

Radio and Youth Audience Report

Radio and the Youth Audience

From the articles I have read, young radio audiences are on the decline because of the fact that the young community prefer choice. What I mean by this is that young people would prefer to listen to the music that is on their MP3 Players, on the Internet through YouTube etc, rather than music that is broadcasted on the radio. This is because they have a choice on what they want to listen to, all they have to do is select their desired music and listen to it. On the radio, certain music is played through a charts system, like the top 10 tracks that are popular at the moment. Which unless the listener enjoys the music that the radio is broadcasting, they have no input in what is playing. They could change to a different station, but that station will most probably play the same music that is on the first station, just in a different order. Young people not listening to the radio is bad for the radio companies, this is because it is a massive chunk of the population that could be listening to what they broadcast, but choose not to. There are many other, free ways of listening to music nowadays, such as:
Using the internet to find your desired music using YouTube (64% of teenagers listen to music on YouTube), Spotify, Last.fm, and many more.

Using a mobile phone with music on, many of smartphones such as the iPhone can have a whole library of music stored on them.

Using an MP3 Player to access music.
CD Players/Stereos.
Going to gigs from your favourite bands.
Attending clubs which have artists performing.
Going to an artist’s concert to listen to them perform live.

Ways that radio can appeal to younger audiences are to bring in a phone line system in which the listener can phone up the radio’s hotline and request a song for the radio DJ to play. This would help younger people be interested in radio, and help the station out by attracting a larger audience to listen to their station, and bring extra money in from the mass amount of people that would be phoning in. another way that radio could appeal to younger audiences would be to organise concerts managed by the radio station showcasing the hottest acts of the time, although some radio stations already do this, they could make it more personal by asking a poll of people which artists they would like to see there. Again, this would help the radio station by gaining more listeners, people could bring friends/family along that have never listened to the certain radio station and become interested in it and listen to it. Another way this would help is that the radio station would earn more money from the tickets being sold, in which are needed to join the event. This would also help the artists performing by bringing in a much bigger fan base if the listeners enjoy what they are hearing.
